Nursing Home Abuse
You trusted a facility with someone you love. Illinois law holds them to that trust.

You trusted them with your family. They answer for that trust.
Placing a parent or loved one in a nursing home is one of the hardest decisions a family makes, and it rests on a promise: that the people paid to provide care will actually provide it. When you notice the unexplained bruise, the sudden weight loss, the bedsore that should never have formed, that promise has been broken. Trust your instincts. Families are almost always the first to know.
Tarpey, Jones & Schroeder represents residents and families in nursing home abuse and neglect cases in Chicago and throughout Illinois, where thousands of complaints of elder abuse are filed every year. The Illinois Nursing Home Care Act gives residents real, enforceable rights, and gives facilities real consequences for violating them. We hold facilities accountable not only for what happened to your loved one, but for the understaffing and corner-cutting that allowed it.

Common questions before you call.
Every question below is one we answer in consultations every week. Yours is free. Call (312) 782-6411.You often cannot know without the records, but bedsores, unexplained injuries, sudden weight loss, and repeated falls are rarely “just aging.” That is what the free consultation is for: we obtain the chart and staffing records and tell you honestly what they show.
Nothing upfront. We work on contingency, and the Illinois Nursing Home Care Act allows recovery of attorney fees from the facility, a protection most injury cases do not have.
Their safety comes first, if you believe they are in danger, act, and report concerns to the Illinois Department of Public Health. Moving your loved one does not weaken the legal claim; the facility remains accountable for what already happened.
It is the standard response, and the records usually say otherwise. Pressure sores, falls by known at-risk residents, and medication errors are overwhelmingly preventable with adequate staffing and proper care plans.
Your family may have claims under both the Nursing Home Care Act and the Illinois Wrongful Death Act. We pursue them together, with the care and discretion these cases deserve.
Retaliation against residents is illegal under Illinois law, and facilities know a represented family is watching. In our experience, care improves, not worsens, once a facility is on notice.
